As a certified clinical supervisor with 25 years of counselling practice in the educational and social service, and trained in child protection work (professional accountability practice model), I strongly believe that counselling or clinical social work practice is a human to human encounter between the helping professional and the client. Hence, it is crucial and ethical to seek clinical supervision to enhance the professional’s competency in clinical skills in the form of live supervision or collaborative dialogue. Clinical supervision also creates a safe space to explore some of the potential transference and counter-transference issues. In addition, any emotions that might have evoked during the practice can be addressed immediately, to avoid further impairment of professional practice, or therapeutic relationship with clients.
Finally, clinical supervision aims to enable helping professionals to continue their clinical practice with minimal emotional impact on their personal lives. This would enable counsellors and social workers to sustain and derive much joy in their helping profession in serving others.
Counsellors, social workers, or any helping professionals, as well as students pursuing their practicum in counselling or clinical social work practice are welcome to contact me for more information on clinical and professional supervision.
